Editorial policy and sources

Last updated October 7, 2026

The rule behind every page: state only what an official source says, show the source’s own words next to it, and date it. If the sources disagree, we show both.

Quoted word for word, checked on every build

  • Every rule, fee, date and exemption is shown with a verbatim line from the agency page or document it comes from and the agency’s name, linked to the page’s list of sources, which gives the address of each source and the day we read it.
  • We keep the text of every source. Each time the site is built, every quoted line on every page is compared with that text (ignoring only spacing, because text taken from PDF files splits words); a line that is not on its source stops the build.
  • Numbers in our own explanations are either quoted or worked out from quoted figures (a sum of fees, a model-year range, a count of listings), and worked-out numbers are labeled as such. Population figures for cities on a county line are 2020 Census counts, and say so.

Pages read through the Internet Archive

Some agency servers (TCEQ, DPS and the Legislature’s site) refuse connections from where this site is built. For those we read the most recent Internet Archive copy of the official page, and say so: “page as published” gives the capture date, and the link opens the archived copy. We do not use a copy that predates the change it describes (for example, nothing about inspections is read from a copy made before January 1, 2025).

Station listings

Texas publishes its list of certified inspection stations only as a search form. Our station listings come from public map listings (Apple Maps and Yelp data, returned by DuckDuckGo’s map search for “emissions testing” and “state inspection station” in each program county), kept only when the listing’s category or name names inspections, emissions testing or smog checks. A listing that has only its name to go on must name a vehicle (state, auto, car, emissions, sticker and the like), because home inspectors use the word “inspection” too. We open every listed website: a dead link is not shown, and a business whose own site describes home or property inspections is removed. A listing with neither a phone number nor a working website is removed. We keep name, address, phone, website and map point; never ratings, reviews, opening hours or photos. A listing is not proof of DPS certification, and every list says so. Last refreshed Oct 7, 2026.

Which pages search engines see

  • Guides are offered to search engines when they have at least 300 words of our own writing (quotes do not count) and at least 2 verified quotes.
  • County pages are offered to search engines; the build checks that no two of them are near-copies (70% or more of their wording shared).
  • City pages exist for cities that lie partly inside and partly outside a program county, when at least 50 residents (2020 Census) live on each side of the line. They are offered to search engines only when at least 500 residents live in the part outside the program and the program-county part has at least 3 station listings.
  • Station listing pages are never offered to search engines: a name, address and phone number is not enough to deserve one.
  • The station finder is not offered to search engines either: its lists load in the browser, so a search engine would see an empty form.

Corrections

See report a correction. When an agency changes a page, we re-read it, update the quote and the date, and change the pages that use it.
