About TX Emissions Guide

Last updated October 7, 2026

TX Emissions Guide is an independent guide to the Texas vehicle emissions inspection program, operated by TX Emissions Guide. It answers the questions Texans actually have: does my county require a test, what does it cost, does my car need one, and what happens at registration?

The official answers are spread over several agencies: TCEQ runs the emissions program, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) certifies stations and issues waivers, and the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) and the county tax offices handle registration. We bring them into one place and show, next to every rule, the agency’s own words and the day we read them.

What you will find here

  • County pages for the 18 program counties, with fee caps, start dates, vehicles registered, the county tax office and neighboring counties. See counties.
  • 30 guides, each answering one question with quoted sources. See guides.
  • Tools: a county checker for all 254 counties, a fee calculator and a station finder with 132 station listings.

Where the information comes from

Rules, fees and dates come from 51 official documents and pages of TCEQ, DPS, TxDMV and the Texas Legislature, listed on the editorial policy page. County boundaries come from the U.S. Census Bureau. Station listings come from public map listings and are labeled as such.

Independence

  • We are not a government agency and are not affiliated with any agency, county or inspection station.
  • No station pays to be listed or to appear higher. We publish no ratings or reviews.
  • The site carries no advertising today. If that changes, ads will be labeled and kept apart from the information, and the privacy policy will be updated first.
